5 Tips for Saving Money

By Steven O. Evans, PhD

We all work hard for our money, so why not watch where it goes?  Andy Griffth once said, “A penny saved is a penny not taxed.” Think on that. Here are some tips I’ve learned to move my pennies around.

  1. Cut any unused or barely used memberships
    1. This can include gym memberships, streaming media, or cable TV.
  2. Know your auto insurance details
    1. Learn the terms, like collision and comprehensive.  Do you really need all the items they have on your policy? Can you get a discount paying for several months in advance?  Call now and then to get new quotes, rates go up and down.  Are there discounts for autopay?
  3. Go through all your credit card and bank statements monthly. Line by line.
    1. If there is anything you can do without, cancel it.  It adds up after a while.  Be sure to check all your late fees and interest payments.  These are all wasted money.
  4. Cancel almost all your credit cards.
    1. If you can move your cards to two or three, you’ll save time trying to manage several cards, late fees, and statements.  Your credit score may even go up.
  5. Negotiate the monthly cable or internet bill.
    1. Call and see what special rates they may have.  I’ve learned that being nice to the person on the phone usually works the best.  They’re more likely to take the time to find you the best deal. Remember, they’re people too, just trying to make a living.

Happy saving!
