What has more fabulous gowns than an Oscar’s red carpet, raises substantial money for LGBTQ charities and is ruled by an Empress and an Emperor? Why, it’s the Imperial Sun Court of all Florida, the Florida chapter of the Imperial Court System, the LGBTQ philanthropic organization that was founded in 1965 by World War II veteran Jose Julio Sarria. The Imperial Court system has successfully combined high drag events with charity ever since. It is the oldest LGBTQ organization in the world and proudly boasts 70 chapters located across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The Florida chapter will be holding the coronation of the new Emperor and Empress of Reign VI on January 20, 2024, at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North and preparations are underway. Warning: you may experience a shortage of sequins in the state of Florida. I spoke to the outgoing Emperor, Emperor E, (real name Eric Lipson) to find out more about this exciting event.

Charles Baran: Hello Eric! What can you tell us about the Imperial Sun Court of all Florida.

Eric Lipson: Since 2018, our chapter, a registered 501c3, has raised over $250,000 for LGBTQ organizations in Florida. Beneficiaries were Compass Youth, TransSOCIAL, Pet Project, Julian’s Fountain of Youth, and UCC Ruth Ministry. And every month, members of the Sun Court pack lunches for food insecure people. It’s been a rewarding year. I’ve enjoyed serving with my Empress Leila Cox, Empress LTS (Latina Tropical Storm). While we have a great time at the galas and balls, it’s the charity work that matters most.

Charles Baran: Has the court chosen a new Empress and Emperor for Reign VI?

Eric Lipson: Not yet. They will be announced at the coronation on January 20th.  We are all very excited.  It will be a spectacular evening!
