The Places That Inspire Us, Learning to See Our Surroundings Differently

By Claudia Castillo

Where does inspiration begin? Sometimes it is found in a painting, a conversation, or an unexpected idea. Other times, it begins simply by stepping into a place that encourages us to slow down, look more closely, and experience our surroundings differently.

As Broward County celebrates 50 years of arts and culture, it feels like an especially meaningful time to consider the places that nurture creativity, not only museums and galleries, but also gardens, landscapes, historic spaces, and environments where art and nature intersect.

At the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, inspiration can be found in stillness. Its Japanese gardens bring together water, stone, plants, architecture, and carefully composed views. Walking through them reminds us that creativity does not always need to be loud or complicated. Sometimes it emerges from balance, restraint, and simply taking the time to observe.

At the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, art and nature become almost inseparable. Monumental sculptures appear among palms and tropical vegetation surrounding the former home and studio of sculptor Ann Weaver Norton. There is something especially powerful about experiencing an artist’s work within the environment where she lived and created. This year, the gardens also begin their own 50th anniversary season, a fitting reminder of the lasting impact creative spaces can have on a community.

Closer to home, Flamingo Gardens in Davie offers another kind of inspiration. Here, nature takes center stage. Tropical plants, towering trees, wildlife, colors, textures, and patterns remind us that creativity often begins with observing what already surrounds us. South Florida’s landscape provides an extraordinary visual language if we take the time to notice it.

As an artist, I have learned that inspiration doesn’t always arrive while standing in front of a canvas. It can begin with a reflection on water, the shape of a tree, a quiet path, a sculpture emerging from a garden, or an unfamiliar way of seeing the world.

Perhaps celebrating our cultural landscape also means learning to look at it again. The places that inspire us don’t simply give us something to see; they can change the way we see.

Beyond the Canvas is a monthly column exploring the people, places, and ideas shaping Broward County’s creative future. Each month, I’ll look beyond the artwork itself to discover how creativity transforms our communities and enriches everyday life.
