Symphony of the Americas’ Artistic Director Pablo Mielgo welcomes special guest Armenian-American pianist, Sergei Babayan, to the stage for the Symphony’s 2022/2023 Season Finale, Schumann and Brahms Bridging Musical Genius. The performance will take place May 9, at 7:45pm in the Amaturo Theater at Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Prior to the performance, at 6:45pm, join Pablo Mielgo as he unveils his musical lineup for the 2023-2024 season during an “In Conversation With” Mielgo and Executive Director Steven Haines.
Babayan is one of the leading pianists of our time and has observed that making music should be open to surprises and spontaneous insights, allowing unexpected emotions to emerge and subtle shadings to evolve naturally. A Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist; Babayan’s latest release, Rachmaninoff (DG 2020), received numerous awards, including BBC Recording of the Month and CHOC Classica. In 2018 he released his own transcriptions for two pianos of works by Sergei Prokofiev with Martha Argerich, Prokofiev for Two (DG 2018).
Babayan has collaborated with such conductors as Antonio Pappano, David Robertson, Rafael Payare, Thomas Dausgaard, Tugan Sokhiev, Valery Gergiev, and Dima Slobodeniouk. He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and is a regular guest at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and Munich’s Prinzregententheater, among others.
Symphony of the Americas program features Schumann & Brahms. The composers provide two worlds of romanticism through extraordinary musical vision and composition. From Schumann’s intimate approach to the orchestral richness and grandeur of Brahms, these two composers explore unique symphonic sounds, creating their own musical empires and repertoire.
