Soak Up the Sun, Stay in the Moment

By Francine Marks-Weinstein, LMHC

As summer approaches, many of us feel a natural lift in mood. Our minds drift toward vacation plans, beach getaways, poolside afternoons, and spontaneous road trips.

For many people, especially within the LGBTQA+ community, the excitement of summer can collide with body image concerns and social anxiety. A pleasant daydream about travel turns into future-focused fears: Will I feel confident? Will I be accepted? Will my body look okay?

When our thoughts race ahead like this, anxiety tends to follow and we begin living in imagined scenarios. The good news is that we can gently guide our minds back to the present.

Summer can become an opportunity to practice mindfulness. Instead of projecting into the future, bring attention to your senses right now. Notice the warmth of sunlight on your skin. Listen to the rhythm of your breath. Tune into the sound of waves, music, or laughter nearby. Feel your feet grounded beneath you. Observe colors, scents, textures, and movement around you. The present moment is almost always more manageable than the stories our minds create.

Planning travel can also feel more supportive when we intentionally choose LGBTQA+ friendly destinations. Feeling safe to be visible, authentic, and expressive transforms a trip from stressful to restorative. Parades, festivals, and community events during Pride season celebrate identity, resilience, and joy. Being surrounded by acceptance can soften body image pressure and remind us that confidence grows from self-compassion, not perfection.

Cognitive awareness plays a powerful role here. When you notice your mind racing toward worst-case scenarios, pause and label the pattern: future-tripping, comparison, self-critique. Gently redirect to what is real and present. What do I see? What do I hear? What do I feel physically? This practice builds emotional steadiness and helps you respond rather than react.

Summer is not a test of appearance; it is an invitation to experience life more fully. You deserve memories shaped by connection, pleasure, and presence not ruled by anxiety.
