Not Just Accepted—Celebrated: I Found Belonging at UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya

By Joshua Estrin

As a gay traveler, I’ve often been passively accepted or quietly tolerated—but at UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya, I was genuinely celebrated. Belonging here wasn’t a corporate afterthought; it was the heartbeat of each mezcal-drenched afternoon and spontaneous poolside chat. This is a place where community isn’t an “amenity”—it’s the air you breathe.

The airport transfer (included with many packages) took me from Cancún to a sanctuary steeped in modern design and subtle Mayan influences. What truly stood out wasn’t just the palm-framed pools or the sweeping ocean views—it was the laughter, openness, and the small details embracing both local art and LGBTQ+ pride. Here, I could finally exhale; no explanations were required.

Luxury at UNICO is thoughtful. Guestrooms offer sanctuary with handcrafted decor, rooftop terraces, and customizable minibars. Want a midnight snack or breakfast on the balcony? Room service is delivered around the clock, and the staff is as diverse as the guests.

Wellness is woven into the experience: three sun-splashed pools, full poolside service, and new classes to try each morning. The spa is focused on total renewal, from hydrotherapy soaks and signature facials to inclusive gender-affirming treatments.  Dining at UNICO is an experience, with options such as Mi Carisa, serving coastal Italian classics and wood-fired pizzas in a romantic Mediterranean setting just steps from the sand; Cueva Siete, whose ever-evolving menu brings Mexico’s regional favorites to life with guest star chefs; Mura House, for sushi, teppanyaki, and Japanese flavors that pop; 20°87° Restaurant, perfect for breezy breakfasts, grill favorites, and unforgettable lunches with a view; and Café Inez, an oasis for European-style café snacks, rich coffee, and flaky pastries.

Foodies can expect more than just menus: chef residencies, cocktail classes, hands-on tastings, and special pop-ups—especially during the vibrant Superbia Summer—turn meals into opportunities for connection. I found the best travel moments were swapping stories with new friends or sharing sips at a tequila tasting.

UNICO’s embrace of LGBTQ+ guests isn’t performative—it’s organic and undeniable. Same-sex couples and chosen families are welcomed, weddings are handled with flair, and the guest list is as diverse as a Riviera sunset. There’s no need for nervous glances or code-switching; acceptance here is a daily reality, not special programming.

In a world that often stops at “LGBTQ+ friendly,” this is a resort that unapologetically invites everyone to live out loud. Come for the gorgeous setting, inventive cuisine, and luxe details—and stay for the unforgettable sense of belonging.
