Gabe Salazar Announces Season 15 for GMCSF

By Denny Patterson

Continuing its testament of strength and unity in the face of adversity, artistic director Gabe Salazar is proud to invite us all to the 15th season of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF).

From their annual fundraiser to their holiday and Pride concerts, this season is focused on the theme of “SHOUT! Let Your Voices Be Heard,” which is about amplifying the voices of our community, celebrating diversity, and using the power of music to inspire change. This theme is woven into every performance and event the GMCSF has planned, highlighting where they’ve come from and where they are going.

Salazar took some time to talk with OutClique about what else the GMCSF has in store, as well as how this vibrant and beloved group continues to evolve and make a difference.

Denny Patterson: How excited are you for the GMCSF’s upcoming 15th season?

Gabe Salazar: I’m incredibly excited about our 15th-anniversary season! It’s a milestone for the chorus and our entire community. The support and participation have been instrumental in our journey, and we have so much planned that will celebrate our collective growth and our future. The energy within the chorus, fueled by the public’s enthusiasm, is electrifying, and I can’t wait for our audiences to experience what we’ve been working on.

Denny Patterson: Can you give us a rundown on what to expect and what this season includes?

Gabe Salazar: This season is a vibrant tapestry of powerful performances and special events catering to South Florida’s diverse audience. We start with our annual fundraiser, The Chic & Unique Ball, at The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort on November 2, 2024. Then, in December, we have our traditional Holiday Spectacular concerts at Sunshine Cathedral and Hard Rock Live. Our holiday concerts are always crowd favorites and will feature a guest artist, which is still to be determined. In March, we’re thrilled to present Broadway Blockbusters, featuring some of the best-loved musical theater songs. Our Pride Concert in June will round out our mainstage concert season with a tribute to Dazzling Divas. It’s going to be a season that truly showcases the versatility and heart of the chorus, with something for everyone. We’ll also engage with the community throughout the season through events like our Community Sing-Along and celebrate our rich history with anniversary festivities.

Denny Patterson: What do you always hope audiences take away from a GMCSF production?

Gabe Salazar: I hope that audiences leave feeling uplifted, inspired, and connected. Our performances are about more than just the music; they tell stories that resonate with our community and reflect shared experiences. I want people to walk away feeling seen, heard, and empowered to be authentic.

Denny Patterson: You have been the GMCSF’s artistic director since 2021. How would you say the chorus has evolved since you stepped into the role?

Gabe Salazar: Since becoming artistic director, I’ve seen the chorus evolve in artistry and outreach. We’ve broadened our repertoire, explored new themes, and deepened our engagement with the community. There’s a greater sense of cohesion and purpose among the singers; our audiences feel that, too. We’re continually pushing ourselves to grow and make a lasting impact.

Denny Patterson: How have you grown as an artistic leader since joining the GMCSF?

Gabe Salazar: Leading the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida has been a transformative experience. I’ve grown in my ability to inspire and unite diverse voices. I’ve learned about balancing the creative vision with ensuring our work is accessible and meaningful to our community. We have an unwavering commitment to our mission of creating change through music. I am confident in our leadership and deeply committed to this cause.

Denny Patterson: Is there anything else you would like to mention or plug?

Gabe Salazar: I encourage everyone to join us for this monumental 15th-anniversary season. Whether you’re a long-time supporter or someone attending for the first time, there’s something extraordinary in store. Keep an eye out for information on our gala fundraiser, The Chic & Unique Ball, on November 2, 2024, and get ready to celebrate the joy and power of music with us!
