New City Players unveils its thought-provoking 2024-2025 season, “Eras Collide,” featuring four productions that traverse time to illuminate our present. Drawing inspiration from philosopher George Santayana’s warning that “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” this season invites audiences to look back in order to move forward.
“Our ‘Eras Collide’ season is a journey through pivotal moments in history that continue to shape our world today,” says Timothy Mark Davis, Producing Artistic Director of New City Players. “From 1862 to the present, these stories remind us of the cyclical nature of the human experience and the importance of not only learning from, but reckoning with our past.”
The season opened with Short Plays: Lauder Made (September 27-28, 2024), directed by Davis. This 75-minute showcase featured five new plays by South Florida playwrights, weaving together threads of Fort Lauderdale’s rich history.
Next, the world premiere of The Last Christmas by Tyler Johnson Grimes (December 6-22, 2024), also directed by Davis, completes the trilogy of holiday plays New City Players has produced over the past two seasons by taking audiences back to radio station WNCP on Christmas Eve in 1999. As the new millennium approaches, this heartwarming play explores timeless themes of connection and hope.
Arthur Miller’s classic All My Sons (February 21–March 9, 2025), directed by Mary Gundlach, transports viewers to 1947. This powerful and timeless drama examines the lasting impact of World War II on American families and the enduring pursuit of the American Dream, regardless of the consequences.
The season concludes with Dominique Morisseau’s Confederates (July 11-27, 2025), directed by Maha McCain. This Florida premiere that premiered Off-Broadway in 2022 deftly and comedically connects the experiences of an enslaved woman in 1862 with those of a modern-day university professor, highlighting the persistent echoes of racism across centuries.
“‘Eras Collide’ challenges us to see the connections between past and present,” adds Davis. “We’re excited to engage our community in conversations that bridge time and illuminate our shared humanity.”
Performances for the three mainstages will take place at Island City Stage in Wilton Manors. Season tickets are on sale now and single tickets for the three main stage productions went on sale October 1, 2024.
