June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season, and with hurricane season comes the anxiety and uncertainty that any minute we could become the target of a storm. Although every year BBB and other organizations raise awareness on how to be prepared for a storm, BBB would like to provide some tips on how you can be prepared before there’s even a storm coming our way.
Check the state of your roof- The average life of a roof is anywhere between 15 to 20 years. Check your roof for any weak points that need fixing and that could become an issue during a storm.
Trim the branches in your backyard and front yard- Overgrown branches can become projectiles and leave a lot of debris during a storm. Maintain trimmed branches in your backyard and front yard and if you need assistance, hire a professional at BBB.org
Go over your insurance policies- It is important to understand what your insurance policies cover in case of disaster, go over your car insurance, homeowner’s insurance or rental insurance and add any coverage that may be necessary such as wind or flooding insurance. Consult with an insurance claim adjuster you trust about what coverage may be the most appropriate.
Keep a printed list of vendors- We often lose power and internet after a storm, making it difficult to research professionals you may need after the disaster. Research vendors you feel comfortable working with and that you may need in case there’s damage (water restoration, branch trimmers, roofers, plumbers, window installers, and insurance adjusters). Keep a printed list of these vendors and their information in your hurricane kit. Research for reputable professionals at BBB.org
Have a plan in place- Update your hurricane kit with everything you may need such as batteries, non-perishable food, first aid kit, flashlights, pet food, water, and a list of vendors and have a backup plan in case you need to evacuate whether it is a friend or relative’s home, or your nearest shelter. It is important to have a plan in place of what you may need and what you will do in case you find yourself in the path of a storm. The more prepared you are, the better.
