A Time of Giving

Lately, it seems that everyone is focused on what separates us: regions, identities, beliefs, cultures.

How can people dismiss or denigrate entire groups of people, based on their race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, or economic situation?

You may have felt the tension over the Thanksgiving table last month. You may even be skipping this month’s holiday gatherings, just to avoid those awkward conversations.

This same, awkward holiday season is also the time when many non-profits activate their fundraising efforts, hoping that everyone will help out, with generous gifts that can empower services in the coming year.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Do you support the local non-profits in South Florida that make life safer, more supportive, and just plain better for our LGBT community? More specifically, do you support non-profits even if they primarily serve people who don’t socialize where you do, or may not even look like you?

One local non-profit agency that may not have been on your giving list is Latinos Salud. “But I’m not Latino,” you may say. Did you know that Latinos Salud serves the entire LGBT community? That’s right: while they focus their recruitment primarily on the underserved gay Latino community, they have always welcomed friends, partners, and allies to their four South Florida locations.

From one-stop PrEP enrollment, to same-day HIV testing appointments and walk-in services, to on-site STD treatment, to engaging free community events, Latinos Salud serves 20,000 community members each year.

If that sounds like a non-profit that supports the community, why not step up and show your support of their efforts, during this time of giving? Best of all, when you donate to their Florida AIDS Walk team, your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar! (Your tax receipt will come from the Walk’s hosts, AIDS Healthcare Foundation. But all the benefits of your generosity will go directly to Latinos Salud.)

In a time of division, you will find that your gift of any size makes you feel connected.
