The Prime of Life

By John M. Hayden

Wine. Cheese. Cher’s career. They all get better with age. The same can be said for the men of Wilton Manors. Fort Lauderdale Primetime Gentlemen is a social group for mature men, as well as people who like hanging around them. To say they look at age as just a number would be an understatement. Some are retired and chill. Others retired but always on the move. Some work constantly. This is far from a one-size-fits-all club.

What they share, besides an experienced view of life, is a love of community. Prime Gentlemen involve themselves in their community with volunteerism, politics, gay issues, arts, sports, entertainment, and every other facet of healthy living. They proudly say that their goal is to “enjoy the opportunities and friendships that develop with other Prime Gentlemen throughout the world.”

The group has been around since 2003 and was first known as Fort Lauderdale Prime Timers. The Gentlemen meet the first Sunday of the month at the Pride Center at Equality Park on North Dixie Highway. They celebrate birthdays, deal with any group business then eat. Let’s face it, no matter what stage of life you’re in, good food makes for good friends.

The rest of the month is pretty packed. They meet for drinks at Matty’s, tennis at Brummer Park, or bowling in Margate. Some nights are movie nights while other evenings are just a meet up for dinner.

You reach a stage in life where you realize your time is too valuable and decide to only spend it with people you like doing things that interest you. That’s the genius of Primetime Gentlemen. They do a little bit of everything. Members can go to some or all of the events.

Membership is $31.50 a year, $62.25 for couples, a bit more if you want the newsletter mailed to you.
