Are You Thirsty?

By Michael A. Ferrara – Hair Stylist at HUSH Spa

Summer may be behind us, and we may have quenched our thirst at one (or more) pride events, charity pool parties, or our very own Hunters Nightclub here in Wilton Manors. Coming into fall and winter, your hair may be getting a bit thirsty this time of year. Have no fear guys because I’m going to share with you my hairdresser’s secrets to keeping your hair looking fly all winter long!

Conditioner

I hear from my new clients they don’t use conditioner because it takes too much time or that it makes their hair harder to style. Here’s the deal, your hair is like a piece of fabric; it needs moisture in order to move more fluidly and behave exactly how you want it. If you haven’t been conditioning lately, it may take a couple of tries with styling, but soon you will see how much easier it is to manipulate your well conditioned hair into any style you want. I recommend a conditioner that feels thick and easily covers your hair without dripping, but also washes out leaving your hair soft and light, and not weighed down.

2-1 Shampoo and Conditioner

Instead of just telling you what I think of these convenient yet ineffective combo bottles (oops, I think I just did), I’ll ask you a question instead. Would you wash and wax your car with the same product at the same time? I know . . . mind blown.

Lube Quenches Thirst, too!

Now I’m not talking about that pure-Swiss-J-wetter-than-water silicone stuff in your glove compartment, or uh, your nightstand at home. Hair lube, or better known as hair “serum,” is another great way to not only condition dry and damaged hair, but also can be a great pre-styling tool for casual looks, especially if you are getting to be more salt than pepper. When hair loses its pigment and turns gray, it also loses porosity which is your hair’s ability to retain moisture. Thus, making gray hair that much more unruly and difficult to control. Your answer is simple. Keep using conditioner, and especially for those mature men still sporting a nice head of hair, I would strongly recommend a serum, too. I have a hair lube coming out very soon appropriately named “Hair Lube” by my product line Blowmei. Look for it online or in one of the shops/salons in the Fort Lauderdale area.

So I will leave you with another one of my analogies to really drive home the importance of conditioning your hair. Think about washing and drying your clothes with or without fabric softener. Do you want your hair stiff and unmanageable? Or soft, wrinkle free, and smelling great? I’m going with the latter.
