GMCSF is Thrice As Nice in April

By John Hayden

For the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), April is coming in like a lion and will go out like a lion as well. The chorus is drinking lots of hot tea and lemon to prepare for a trio of shows that embrace their range, their community, and horses.

April 6, 2024, will involve a lot of singing and a lot of horsing around. They’re starting the day in Wellington at the Lexus International Gay Polo Tournament. The chorus always likes to hit the road and take part in LGBTQIA+ events.

In keeping with their musical mission, the Polo matches benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “The guys are so engaged right now,” GMCSF Artistic Director Gabe Salazar told OutClique. “They’re just following every step that we do.”

Once the steeds are in the stables, chorus members will use their automotive horsepower to head back to Broward for the Davie Jazz Festival. The party starts at 6pm at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.

Jazz is a very freeform genre, and may seem like an odd choice for such a precisely timed group like the GMCSF. But the ensemble loves the challenge and the opportunity to be part of an event that brings LGBTQIA+ and other communities together to make music magic.

While outstanding jazz is a feat unto itself, letting a room full of fans take control of the show is a risky proposition that comes with a high reward.

On April 20, 2024, GMCSF will do just that. That’s the date of their next community singalong at Hunters Nightclub at 3pm. The singalongs have quietly become a must-attend staple in Wilton Manors. Now fans loudly sing their praises.

“They’re really eager and ready for it,” Salazar said. “We’re hoping to make it bigger and excited to make it part of our community. We want to make it a really big event for the community in the future.”

The first one was less than a year ago and debuted to critical reviews from attendees and the chorus. Lovers of showtunes flock to the event and maybe even bring a few friends who may be skeptical about an event like the singalong. However, they all leave as converts to show tune fun.

The most recent was in February and a devoted contingent of fans quickly came in and filled up the dance floor in front of the stage.

Disney tunes, big screen hits, and more are on the set list. You can get tickets and more information at GMCSF.org.
