“It’s okay to ask for help.” Publicizing this simple but powerful message is the goal of Will Howard, Mr. Ramrod 2024. Howard hopes to use his recognition in bringing mental health awareness to the LGBTQIA+ community. “Help is just a phone call away.”
The LGBTQIA+ population is 2.5 times more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression than hetero counterparts. Within the LGBTQIA+ population, 30-60% deal with anxiety and depression during their lives. Not being accepted by family, internal homophobia, ostracization from gender-conforming counterparts, and abuse are a few of many factors that may contribute to mental health struggles.
Howard has created and is photographed in a series of public service announcements found in several local establishments. Stress, anxiety, depression, vulnerability, and sadness are a few key words to grab attention. Following the taglines, “There is a solution-our community cares” and “it’s okay to ask for help” are the numbers to receive mental health support. Call 988 or text 741741 for immediate assistance. Howard’s campaign has already reached Austin, Chicago, and Dallas with the goal of being in all leather clubs within the U.S. Howard’s passion in this mental health crusade is “to give everyone the opportunity to be your best. Mental health is a treatable disease; we’ll help you.”
Local organizations specializing in LGBTQIA+ mental health programs include SunServe and Broward House. SunServe offers an innovative Journaling Program which teaches coping skills by working with a counselor and being an active recovery participant through writing. Broward House provides individualized care to meet needs through your own lifestyle. Other non-profit organizations serving the LGBTQIA+ community are Care Resource and AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHS). Mental health services at Holy Cross Hospital, Midland Medical, and Memorial Healthcare can be provided through personal insurance.
For immediate support call 988 or text 741741. Further information may be found at Sunserve.org, Browardhouse.org, careresource.org, and ahf.org. Howard’s advice is to “take action to better yourself by using available resources. Everyone is loved.”
