While eating a pink pumpkin might not cure cancer, supporting the American Cancer Society through the Pink Pumpkin Pledge might make it possible. Pink Pumpkins was founded to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, as well as to honor and remember Doreen Koenig. As a member of the Koenig family at CITY Furniture, Doreen Koenig supported the cause, and unfortunately was later diagnosed with breast cancer and lost her life fighting it. The name Pink Pumpkins comes from her idea to give out pink pumpkin baskets as a way to celebrate the spooky season of Halloween, as well as make people aware of the disease. Today, it is the name for CITY Furniture’s pledge to support finding a cure.
Before consumers give to any cause or charity, it is always wise to check out the charity to determine if the organization is worthy of your support. One website to use is www.Give.org. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluates charities using 20 standards. Only charities operating in compliance with the standards may obtain use of the BBB Accredited Charity Seal. The American Cancer Society meets all 20 standards and their report is available at: www.give.org/charity-reviews/national/Health/American-Cancer-Society-in-Kennesaw-ga-186
Another source consumers can use is Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator gives the American Cancer Society an 82% rating and states that if this organization aligns with your passions and values, you can give with confidence.
BBB in our role to help bring together the community behind worthwhile initiatives is shining our torch on the various ways CITY Furniture brings together people to help create awareness and raise funds to support cancer research and resources. It is probably impossible to find someone whose life has not been affected by cancer.
CITY Furniture’s website makes it easy to find a way to join with our community to fight cancer. www.cityfurniture.com/company/city-cares/giving-pledge/breast-cancer-awareness
You can donate directly on the website. Remember, only trust websites that use https and show a closed lock next to the URL. Many causes bring people together for walks or other events to raise funds. You can join with other people sharing your passion for a particular cause while also raising funds. You can join our community at the Broward Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Fort Lauderdale on October 22. The team CITY cares will be at the event along with other groups, businesses, and individuals. More information about the event and how to register is also available on the CITY Furniture website.
Even though pink is not one of BBB’s approved brand colors, we may have to break a rule or two to join this initiative. Together we can make a bigger impact.
