Frost Science Upcoming Events April through May 2022

April 15 – Mini- Camp: DNA Day

No school? No problem! Our dynamic Mini-Camps are the perfect action-packed solution to a Teacher Planning Day. Kids (Grades Pre-K to 5) will spend the day exploring the museum’s interactive exhibitions, conducting science experiments, and making new friends. Seeking connection? On Friday, April 15, campers will learn about their deep connections to everything from chimpanzees to, well, bananas through the science of DNA. From analyzing the basics of base pairs to exploring genetic technology in the interactive exhibition, Power of Science, they’ll conduct experiments that help them see themself – and some of Frost Science’s favorite animals – in a new light.

April 20 – LIVE@Frost Science: Imagining Miami’s Environmental Future

In this special Earth Day edition of LIVE@Frost Science on Wednesday, April 20, you’ll hear from three local scientists – Jayantha Obeysekera (‘Obey’), Ph.D., P.E, F.EWRI, Dr. Katharine Mach and Frost Science’s Conservation Program Manager, Shannon C. Jones. These individuals are taking unique approaches to battle the impacts of climate change, from flooding to invasive species. Following the presentations, there will be a Q&A session to discuss the speaker’s presentations and STEM career journeys, moderated by Dr. Kate Carter, Director of Science Communication at Frost Science.

April 30 – Earth Day 2022: Presented by FPL SolarNow

Join us to celebrate Earth Day as we work towards “Understanding the Past and Imagining the Future.” In this day of hands-on climate activities, guests can tackle environmental engineering design challenges with our Frost Science education team and explore ancient sea levels with local researchers. Then, see how local government agencies, non-profits, and companies like FPL are imagining a brighter future with climate-friendly technological innovations. Earth Day 2022 programming is free with paid museum admission. Special programming will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

May 8 – Mini-Me Science: Racecar Stars

Mini-Me Science is a monthly program at Frost Science designed for you and your little one (children ages two to five) to share experiences that engage the senses while promoting exploration and discovery through hands-on activities that are specifically designed for early learners. On Sunday, May 8, speed into a summer of science with physics explorations that accelerate learning. Young engineers will build their own speedways then conduct gravity experiments as they analyze the effect of height on speed and traveling distance. Join us for a wheely-great introduction to measurement!

May 11 – LIVE@Frost Science: The Future of Forensic Science

In this special Earth Day edition of LIVE@Frost Science on Wednesday, May 11, you’ll discover “The Future of Forensic Science,” presented in partnership with the Global Forensic and Justice Center at Florida International University. The evening will be moderated by Dr. Kenneth G. Furton. Panelists include Dr. Diego Cardeñosa, Dr. DeEtta (Dee) Mills, Stephanie Stoiloff, and Selcuk Uluagac. In this engaging panel discussion, you’ll discover both how much has changed in forensic science over the past century and how much has stayed the same.

May 13 – Members-only Preview: Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition

Frost Science members are invited to be the first to experience our newest special exhibition, Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition, during an exclusive members-only evening on Friday, May 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This interactive exhibition will delight audiences of all ages as it showcases areas of forensic science that enabled Sherlock Holmes to solve crimes, and brings to life the historic underpinnings of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich and vibrant stories. Members will have access to enhanced experiences, giveaways, special Frost Planetarium screenings and more.

May 16 – Opening of Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition

Footprints, splatter patterns and the powers of observation mark the journey through Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition. The interactive experience combines science with history and culture to bring to life the historic underpinnings of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich and vibrant stories. Museum guests will learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve some of his era’s most mysterious crimes. Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition features original manuscripts and period artifacts, investigative tools influenced and used by Sherlock Holmes, and interactive crime-solving opportunities.

May 20 – Laser Evening

Join us as we combine legendary music with laser light visuals during Laser Evenings. Rediscover the best chart-toppers with the debut of our new That ’90s Laser Show (8 p.m.) *NEW SHOW*, rock out with Pink Floyd: Best of (10 p.m.), journey back in time with The Doors (9 p.m.), enjoy classics from The Beatles: Best Of (7 p.m.), and end the night with Queen (11 p.m.) all under the Frost Planetarium’s 67-foot dome.

May 22 – Tech Lab: Weather and Augmented Reality

Join Frost Science for a programming series that provides a hands-on immersion into the world of technology. Every workshop includes take-home technology to help ignite curiosity at home. During this Tech Lab, participants will use augmented reality to solve real world problems in this wild session about extreme weather and amazing creatures. You’ll create your own app then deploy it to design solutions for polluted river ecosystems. We’ll be joined by a scientist that studies augmented reality for an in-depth look at how new technology can help tackle old problems.
