December is a month of magic, myth, miracles, and memories. Everywhere we turn in December we are reminded of the magic that seems to be in the air, or maybe it’s in us and this season is meant to remind us of that.

In the Christian calendar we have Advent, which begins the Christian year. Advent is a time of waiting and expectation. After Advent there is Christmastide, celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christmastide is 12 days long, starting December 25 and going through January 5. There are other feast days, too, such as those commemorating St. Nicholas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Stephen.

In Judaism there is Chanukah, which recalls a limited amount of oil lasting longer than it was thought possible. The oil kept lamps lit for eight days while a small band of warriors reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem from occupying forces in the Second Century BCE. The reclaimed Temple was rededicated.

Buddhism has Bodhi Day celebrating the enlightenment of the Buddha. Hinduism celebrates Pancha Ganapati honoring Lord Ganesh. Neopagans celebrate Yule. Kwanzaa honors the cultural heritage and traditional values of people of African descent.
