The annual Men Who Dance festival is just around the corner, literally—it’s at the Broward Center—and the South Florida excitement is building. This year the festival celebrates “Lucky 7” and looking ahead at the lineup, it certainly does seem that way. One of the unexpected highlights of the festival has been the number of “world premieres” that the audience has been privy to before they go on to other stages. Over 20 new choreographic works have been presented on stage, giving the festival an incredible amount of prestige in the dance world! This year is no exception with at least five new works in the program. While holding a few surprises close to the chest, Artistic Director Rafi Maldonado-Lopez, did share with OutClique several of the festival’s highlights that audience members will be experiencing this November at the Amaturo.
Nathalia Arja, a Brazilian native born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, began her training with the Miami City Ballet School in 2008 at the age of 15. She was promoted to the corps de ballet in 2011, soloist in 2014, principal soloist in 2016 and, finally, Principal in 2020. After being featured in works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Andrei Ratmansky, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp and many others, Nathalia has now reinvented herself as a choreographer and will be premiering a thrilling new work with several exceptional dancers from Miami City Ballet.
Francisco “Cisco” Graciano joins the Men Who Dance festival for the first time this year. A native of San Antonio, Texas, and now residing in South Florida, Cisco is a founding member of TAKE Dance Company and danced with the Paul Taylor Company from 2006 to 2017 where he was recognized by The New York Times as a “virtuoso star.” Dance Magazine named him one of its “25 To Watch.” On top of that, everyone at Men Who Dance is excited to welcome Cisco to the South Florida dance scene as a faculty member of the prestigious New World School of the Arts. You won’t want to miss his powerful performance.
The “Tango Twins” are back! Prior Men Who Dance audiences have been clamoring for the return of the Argentinian twin brothers, Nico and German Filipeli. After a two-year hiatus, 2026 is our lucky year! The identical twin tango dancers made history at the World Tango Dance Tournament (Mundial de Tango) in Buenos Aires as the first same-sex couple to win major awards and World Championships. Described on stages around the world as striking and charismatic, their performance is certain to remain with you long after the curtain comes down.
After receiving a thunderous standing ovation last year, the Argentine gaucho trio Tropilla Malambo is back for another extraordinary display of footwork, drumming, boleadoras and whips. Guaranteed, the electrifying energy of this encore performance will raise the roof with joy and music.
