Halloween Isn’t Canceled. “It’s Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus” returns to The Kelsey Theater October 30-31 with a leading cast of south Florida

South Florida’s favorite Halloween show, IT’S JUST A BUNCH OF HOCUS POCUS* (previously Hocus Pocus Live) is landing at The Kelsey Theater
in Lake Park for two nights of holiday fun on October 30 and 31 (performances are at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. each night; each runs 1 hour and 15 minutes). Tickets are on sale with the opportunity to save $10.

Following eight consecutive years of instant sell-outs, the wildly popular all-ages tribute show brings Halloween’s most beloved classic to life with incredible detail. The audience is invited to take a dive into ‘90s nostalgia as South Florida’s top drag performers transform into the film’s iconic characters. All are invited to join this limited-seating, socially distanced event as they tell the story of three wacky witches, accidentally resurrected by teen pranksters on Halloween night in 1993. The dynamic lead cast includes Nicole Halliwell as Winifred Sanderson, Calypso Monroe as Sarah Sanderson and Nicky Monet as Mary Sanderson. Produced and created by South Florida’s drag mastermind Nicole Halliwell (TLC’s I am Jazz, America’s Got Talent, Queenz The Drag Experience), IT’S JUST A BUNCH OF HOCUS POCUS boasts intricately detailed sets, eerily uncanny lookalikes, replica props and costuming, and more in this immersive stage spectacle. Going light years beyond your standard “drag show,” there’s nothing quite like this! Prior to each performance, audiences can enjoy “Wicked Villains,” a “delightfully evil preshow,” starring the cast of QUEENZ The Drag Experience as even more fabulous female impersonators transform into such favorite cartoon villains like Maleficent, Ursula, Cruella DeVille, and The Evil Queen.

“Never before has a drag tribute show gone above and beyond to re-create the magic of a cult classic like this,” said Halliwell. “Like watching your favorite film unfold before your eyes, adults and children, alike, can quote and sing along with their favorite movie moments!”

We sat down and spoke with Nicole Halliwell:

Is Halloween one of your favorite times and if so why?

Absolutely! I’ve always loved everything “spooky” – from haunted houses to horror films, it’s the highlight of every year for me. Loving Halloween comes easy when you grow up with characters like Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and iconic movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas… and
of course, Hocus Pocus!

What inspired you to create this Hocus Pocus tribute show?

I’ve always loved this film and as time went on, Hocus Pocus became synonymous with the holiday for me and so many others. I imagined what an experience would be like to see the film happening live on stage – and this show was born! Here we are, 8 years later delighting audiences of every age, reaching our goal of bringing back childhood nostalgia and introducing these characters to new generations.

What is your favorite moment in the show?

There’s so many! If I had to choose just one, it’s the show’s centerpiece musical number “I put a spell on you”. It’s a crescendo moment that everyone is waiting for from the second we open the curtains. The experience of doing that song in full character and costume to an audience of hundreds who know every word and nuance of it is beyond thrilling. It brings me and the cast full circle from performing the song in our bedrooms as kids in front of our TVs, to living that moment for real.

What was the most challenging element to make it a reality?

Character illusion! We do a lot of difficult things in this show, but bringing life to a particular persona who people study so in depth is really a tedious task. Audiences are very critical when you mess with icons of pop culture as a tribute. You have to absolutely nail it. Years of character study, learning mannerisms, expressions, and then manipulating makeup to tie it all together is an exhausting process, but hearing people in the audience say “oh my god! Is that her?”, is the reward. We want you to double take and question what you’re seeing!

Have you received any feedback or recognition from the original cast?

Yes! Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson) and Doug Jones (Billy Butcherson) have both expressed their love via social media comments! We’ve also gotten likes from the film’s director Kenny Ortega, which was also an honor.

Do you have future plans to create any other similar productions?

For sure! In 2021, we will introduce another Halloween Classic – The Addams Family! With a cast from around the country of character illusionists, we’ll bring this incredible film series to life. Stay tuned!
