- You were recently on the cover of OutClique — how does it feel now to be back on stage with 3 Card Stud?
It feels great to be back in another production by The Foundry/ Plays of Wilton as I’ve already done An Evening With Divine and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Each time working with them has been such a great experience—more fun than the last! This time, though, was a first for me as I have made my debut being fully nude onstage. While I had some apprehensions, I did think to myself, ‘I am very comfortable in my body.’ Plus, I’ve been to Haulover Beach, but also everyone onstage and off was very respectful and supportive of me. - Working with Ronnie Larsen Presents and Plays of Wilton, what drew you to this production in particular?
It was just perfect timing. I finally wrapped up a summer South Florida tour of Pinocchio and around that time I got to see Torch Song at the Foundry and Ronnie came up to me saying that he has a part for me that would be perfect to play. I also really was fascinated to try out being naked onstage in a gay theatre. - What’s been the most fun (or surprising) part about stepping into this role?
The most surprising and most fun part about stepping into this role of the young stud Richard is how similar he is to me! Initially reading the script, I painted a picture that Richard is this himbo frat stud who just loves sex. But as I kept on rehearsing and listening to the character, he is just like me. Not only is it obvious that I’m young but I do have an attraction to daddies. I’m also known to have been a love addict who sometimes rushes into things in order to feel love and acceptance, which I’m sure a lot of people like me want in the end. And so I just played the character as me and just had more fun with it and that’s when my work becomes playing. - Miami is home for you — how does performing here in South Florida shape the way you approach your work?
Initially, I thought theatre was a way for me to escape myself and be someone I’m not. But doing theatre down here has taught me to accept and love myself for who I am and find the fun and truth in myself within the characters I’ve been cast as. - When the curtain comes down, what do you hope audiences take away from this show?
I hope that audiences can take away a fun and enjoyable time at the theatre with lots of laughs, but also a better sense that the elderly community here in Wilton Manors is vibrant and as sexually active as the young ones are.
With 3 Card Stud, Brian Piedra once again proves why he’s a standout in South Florida’s theater community. From his OutClique cover to the stage with Ronnie Larsen Presents and Plays of Wilton, Brian continues to share his talent and passion in ways that connect with audiences. We’re excited to see what’s next for him.
