As the director of the Master Chorale of South Florida, Brett Karlin is no stranger to leading powerful vocal performances that stir the soul and provoke thought. Their latest project, “Considering Matthew Shepard,” is set to be a deeply moving tribute to Matthew Shepard, whose tragic death became a watershed moment for the LGBTQ+ community and human rights advocacy. We sat down with Brett to discuss this significant musical endeavor and its impact on both performers and audiences.
SOE: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind choosing “Considering Matthew Shepard” as your next performance piece?
Brett: The story of Matthew Shepard resonates deeply within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, serving as a poignant reminder of the impact of hate and the enduring need for empathy and understanding. “Considering Matthew Shepard” was chosen not only for its powerful narrative but also for its ability to blend music, poetry, and personal reflection to create an immersive and transformative experience. We wanted to honor Matthew’s memory and use our platform to foster dialogue and promote human rights.

SOE: This performance is bound to evoke strong emotions. How has the chorale prepared to handle the sensitive nature of Matthew Shepard’s story?
Brett: We approached this performance with the utmost sensitivity and care, recognizing the profound emotional weight of Matthew’s story. Our rehearsals have included discussions about the themes of the piece and the historical context of Matthew’s life and death. We also invited guest speakers to share their insights and experiences, helping our singers connect personally with the material. Emotional support has been available to our members throughout this process, ensuring that we handle the subject matter with the respect and sensitivity it deserves.
SOE: Can you share some details about the music and arrangements that will be featured in this show? What can the audience expect in terms of musical style and composition?
Brett: “Considering Matthew Shepard” is a fusion of various musical styles, including classical, jazz, and folk, which together create a rich and dynamic soundscape. The composition, by Craig Hella Johnson, interweaves poignant texts and lyrical melodies with moments of powerful silence and reflection. Audiences can expect a journey through a diverse array of emotions, from sorrow and pain to hope and love, all conveyed through a seamless blend of choral harmonies and instrumental accompaniment.
SOE: This performance not only remembers Matthew but also highlights broader issues facing the LGBTQ+ community. How do you hope it will influence or shift public perceptions?
Brett: We hope that this performance will serve as a catalyst for greater empathy and understanding. By sharing Matthew’s story through the universal language of music, we aim to highlight the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community and encourage audiences to reflect on their own beliefs and actions. We aspire to inspire a commitment to human rights and equality, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society.
SOE: Collaborations are often key in such significant performances. Are there any special collaborations or guest artists involved in this show that you’d like to highlight?
Brett: Yes, we are thrilled to collaborate with several talented individuals and organizations for this performance. Notably, we have partnered with local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups to help contextualize the narrative and provide additional resources for our audience. We are also excited to welcome guest soloists who bring their unique voices and perspectives to the piece, enriching the overall experience and deepening its impact.
SOE: What has been the most challenging aspect of bringing this performance to life, and how have you addressed it?
Brett: One of the most challenging aspects has been navigating the emotional intensity of the material while ensuring that our performers and audiences feel supported. To address this, we have prioritized open communication and provided mental health resources to our chorale members. Additionally, coordinating the various elements of the production, from music to multimedia components, has required meticulous planning and collaboration. Our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to overcome these challenges and create a cohesive and impactful performance.
SOE: Finally, what message do you hope audiences take away from “Considering Matthew Shepard”?
Brett: We hope that audiences leave with a renewed sense of compassion and a deeper understanding of the importance of acceptance and equality. Matthew’s story is a stark reminder of the consequences of hatred, but it also offers a message of hope and resilience. We want our audience to feel inspired to advocate for change, to stand against injustice, and to contribute to creating a world where everyone is valued and loved for who they are.
As we conclude this insightful conversation, we are reminded of the power of art to honor, remember, and provoke change. The Master Chorale of South Florida’s performance of “Considering Matthew Shepard” promises to be an impactful experience, fostering reflection and dialogue. We thank Brett Karlin for his dedication to this meaningful project and for sharing his thoughts with us today.
