The City of Fort Lauderdale is set to mark a significant milestone with a ceremonial demolition of City Hall and the opening of a time capsule nestled within its walls for more than half a century.
This momentous event will take place on May 7, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., at the site of the now-closed Fort Lauderdale City Hall building located at 100 N Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.
Construction of Fort Lauderdale’s City Hall was completed in August 1969 for $3 million. The building served as a cornerstone of the community until the historic storm of 2023 caused significant damage and resulted in its closure. A part of the building will be removed for the demolition ceremony to represent the end of an era and a new chapter in Fort Lauderdale’s rich history.
“City Hall served the city of Fort Lauderdale well for decades and was emblematic of the times during which it was built. Unfortunately, it did not survive the April 2023 floods. As we begin its demolition, let’s both remember its history and look forward to a new chapter for the city,” said Mayor Dean Trantalis.
A time capsule that was sealed within the walls of Fort Lauderdale City Hall during its construction will also be unearthed and opened during the ceremony. The time capsule’s stone was laid and attended by Freemasons.
“The laying of cornerstones have been the tradition of Freemasons in government buildings for hundreds of years, most notably George Washington, with the laying of cornerstones in our Nation’s Capital. Here in Fort Lauderdale, Doric Lodge, has been encouraging this since the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” said Rep. of the Grand Lodge of Florida’s 26th District Deputy Grand Master Juan Roque.
The demolition and time capsule opening ceremony will feature speeches by city officials and community leaders. Members of the media and the public are invited to join this commemorative event and witness an event that blends history and progress.
