New York to Fort Lauderdale with Body by Taco Bell
By Steven O. Evans, PhD
Mark MacKillop, star of Anastasia, West Side Story and Dirty Dancing is bringing Body By Taco Bell to Florida. This is the third in MacKillop’s series of solo shows humorously pulling back the curtain on social media life.
In the online era when anyone can claim to be anything (or anyone), Mark takes on the Instagram job of “Life Coach.” If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at social media “influencers,” you won’t want to miss Mark’s tongue-in-cheek dishing of life advice through song.
Steven O. Evans, PhD: Mark, we are excited to have you come to Fort Lauderdale! Tell us about your show!
Mark MacKillop: Well, this whole thing started because I have such a love and a dislike for social media. I love that I can keep up with what my friends are doing in their lives. Now look, don’t get me wrong, I’m all about a fake-it-till-you-make-it situation, but the things people claim they are in their social media bios is some next level witchcraft and tomfoolery. So that’s kind of where the inspiration for this show came from. I kept seeing people posting thirst trap pics, but with motivational quotes and life advice. I would look and saw that they called themselves a life coach. So I wrote a show about it. In the show I give out terrible life advice and sing songs. So essentially it’s a fun tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating read of “influencers.”
SOE: What’s the scoop on your Instragam and how you work it into your show?
MM: What I’ve tried to do with my shows about social media, is kind of pull back the curtain on the facade we have all built up around us. People are so obsessed with likes and followers that I wanted to shine a spotlight on these things and laugh at them because we’ve gotten so ridiculous.
SOE: Is there one song in particular that’s always in your shows?
MM: With this particular show I have my set list of songs, but I have wiggle room to adjust the show wherever I’m performing it to change things up to accommodate my special guests in that particular city. So the advice I’ll be giving to local diva, Jennifer McCLain, while I’m performing in Fort Lauderdale will be a different song or duet I’d sing with someone else in a different city.
SOE: What’s your favorite part of performing?
MM: I’m just so drawn to it. I love singing and acting and transforming into other people. Ever since I was a little kid you could put me on stage and I’d perform. I think it’s the middle child syndrome. We all feel the need to be seen and if you don’t listen I’ll just put on a show and make sure you do.
SOE: What’s it like to be in Anastasia and travel?
MM: Honestly it’s a pretty crazy experience. There is such a fandom for this musical. They call themselves Fanastasias. As a performer in a show you couldn’t ask for more supportive fans. They love this show and the people in it. I grew up watching this cartoon as a kid so it’s a cool thing to be a part of the first national tour.
